I get to meet many online portal/website sales reps in my day job. Before committing into taking up ad space on their sites, it's a norm to ask for their site stats. Usually, on the stats, there will be monthly result of the site's visit, page view, hits, etc. like the below screenshot.
On a closer look of the above stats, some of you might be thinking what's the difference "Pages" and "Hits"? Many often refer "Hits" as "Page Views". You're not entirely wrong because there are two types of "Hits". The hits that are stated on the above stats result are the hits recorded by log files, and interpreted by log analysis. A second type of "Hits" are counted and displayed by a simple hit counter. Hit counters record one hit for every time a webpage is viewed and it does not distinguish unique visitors. Therefore, stats result "Hits" are referring to the former.
Each file sent to a browser by a web server is an individual hit. Whereas, a pageview is each time a visitor views a page on your website, regardless of how many hits are generated. Pages are comprised of files. Every image in a page is a separate file. When a visitor looks at a page (a pageview), they may see numerous images, graphics, pictures etc. and generate multiple hits. For example, if you have a page with 10 pictures, then a request to a server to view that page generates 11 hits (10 for the pictures, and one for the html file). A page view can contain hundreds of hits.
So, don't get mislead into thinking that the site got ten of thousands visits a day when a portal/website sales rep boast about his/her site popularity by referring the "Hits" figure on the stats to you.
